The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of Tricarico and the cathedral of the Diocese of the same name. Born as a bishopric in 968, it was originally built in Romanesque style. However, the building was remodeled several times, until the last modification by Domenico Sannazzaro who, in 1777, made it as we see it today. The two arches leaning against the facade make it unique in its aesthetics. It is also distinguished by the long staircase that ends in front of the large door. Internally, the church has three naves flanked by a series of chapels and the presbytery divided into three quadrangular rooms. Inside are the relics of San Potito martyr, patron saint of the city, and the remains of the bishop Raffaello delle Nocche. The bell tower, with a square plan, does not stand out particularly from the rest of the building but retains a thirteenth-century mullioned window and a coeval bell. ©️ RIPRODUZIONE RISERVATA Iscriviti alla newsletter di WayGloEmail *Iscriviti
