The 44 churches, the sacred path of Maratea

The territory of Maratea is a sacred area whose journey of faith has affected the city itself, assigning it the title of city of 44 churches.

Placed on the paths, as well as in the inhabited centers of the municipal area, the churches were formerly the stopping points for travelers where they could take refreshment.

Among these sacred places there is certainly the Basilica of San Biagio, which stands on the mountain of the same name, dominated by the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Then, the Mother Church, the Church of the Annunziata, the small Church of the Madonna delle Nevi or the church of San Francesco di Paola (in the photo) stand out.

The fulcrum of Maratea's interest in the Catholic faith was certainly the presence of the port, which recalled the need of travelers for a place to reside or to lean back, even away from the port, as in the case of the Basilica of San Biagio (in the photo).

The 44 churches are therefore an important part of the Marateot identity and depict a sacred and religious journey that has been hundreds of years long and very rich, as shown by the interiors of the Church of the Annunciation (in the photo).
