“Fruit Logistica”, the world’s most important fair in the fruit and vegetable sector, launched in Berlin on February 8, 2017, hosts an exceptional guest this year: Candonga strawberry.
The strawberry, which will have its place of honor in Germany, was born in Basilicata, on the Ionian coast, between Metaponto, Scanzano and Policoro, after seven years of natural crossings between different varieties. These lands were great protagonists of classical history in the period of Magna Graecia.
Even if once these lands were trampled by Pyrrhus and his elephants, today (about 1000 hectares), they are the place where these red and fragrant strawberries are cultivated, which are distinguished by their ruby red color. The full and enveloping fragrance of Candonga strawberry is very different from the fragnance of classic strawberries and the conical and elongated shape is unmistakable of Candonga. Another distinctive sign are the achenes, small but clearly visible and crunchy. A very important feature of Candonga is the minimum treatments that are used to cultivate the strawberry, so it is also sustainable for the environment.
This “lady in red”, who carries the name of Basilicata in the world, can be admired in all its goodness from 8 to 10 February.
The farmers who have had the honor of giving life to this fruit have decided to join the Official Candonga Club, a club that contributes to popularize the strawberry thanks to an important communication linked to the product.
