The Sassi of Matera are the two oldest districts of the city and, since 1993, they have been included in the list of World Heritage Sites protected by Unesco. They are built on one of the two ridges of the Gravina canyon, which separates the town from the Murgia park, the plateau on which, since the Paleolithic, the first villages carved into the rock began to develop.
